Pakistan Society of Criminology held the launching ceremony of the 12th Issue of Pakistan Journal of Criminology, which is a Special Issue on “Policing Terrorism and Radicalism”, on April 24, 2012 edited by Guest-Editor Prof. Geoff Dean of Queensland University, Australia. PSC also launched two other publications namely: “Towards a Functional Juvenile Justice System in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa” and Two Training Manuals (one for trainers and one for participants) on juvenile justice, which are written by the President of Pakistan Society of Criminology, Mr. Fasihuddin. The manuals are the first of its kind in Urdu language.
The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Akbar Khan Hoti, lauded the role of PSC in identifying grey areas in the police professionalism through research and analysis. Speaking on terrorism, the IGP said “if we can win over people, we can win over the terrorists/criminals.” He commented on the out-dated courses being taught to the police, and said that such courses cannot help fighting terrorism. The IGP appreciated the research articles contained in the journal and expressed his satisfaction that some of our police officers in the Pakistan Society of Criminology are contributing a lot to the police department and the society through their strategic thinking and hard work of collecting data and its analysis. He appreciated the President of PSC, Fasihuddin, the learned researchers of the society and the editors of journal for their hard work. He said that he will be anxiously waiting for more in-depth researches published by the Society.
Mr. Syed Akhat Ali Shah, the Additional Inspector General of Police (Special Branch) presented his critical review on the academic achievements of Pakistan Society of Criminology and the present issue of Pakistan Journal of Criminology. He said that PSC is the name of “creativity and hard work”. He requested the honourable IGP to send the President of PSC abroad to present the case of KP police in a more effective manner at various international forums and conferences. He said that commendable work has been done in these training manuals and report of the juvenile justice system.
Prof. Dr. Adnan Sarwar Khan, the Director Institute of Regional Studies, University of Peshawar critically evaluated the Pakistan Journal of Criminology. He said that the most impressive thing about PJC is its consistency. He recommended that the journal should be given a special shelf in all Law colleges and in all libraries of the police and educational institutions of the country.
Mr. Fasihuddin (PSP), President PSC and Editor-in-Chief Pakistan Journal of Criminology said that the PSC is committed to carry out original and value-free researches of practical importance and utility as evident from all the twelve (12) issues of Pakistan Journal of Criminology. He said that he will continue to help the law-enforcement agencies in designing their training curriculum and courses on human rights, de-radicalization and community engagement.
Ms. Uzma Mehboob from a leading NGO, Khwendo Kor, spoke on the role of civil society in promoting human protection, development and research-based policies to be implemented by stakeholders from the government and decision making agencies. She said that it is an honour for her NGO to be a strategic partner with the research activities of PSC.
The ceremony was attended by the senior most police officers, CCPO Peshawar, Commandant Elite Police Force, DIG, Investigation, Consultant Australian Federal Police, Commandant Counter Terrorism Wing, SP Research, AIG Establishment, SSP Operation, SSP Coordination, SP Traffic, SP Rural, officials of woman police, Director Human Rights, academics and students of the University of Peshawar, members of the print and electronic media, and officials of the provincial government. The ceremony was given excellent coverage in both print and electronic media.
